Most people open the panel door once, look at a wall of switches, and close it again. It is worth understanding what is actually in there, because a few minutes of looking tells you most of what you need to know about your home’s electrical capacity.
At the top or the side sits the main breaker. The number stamped on its handle is your service size. In older homes this is often 60 or 100 amps. In homes built or updated in the last few decades it is usually 150 or 200. That number is the ceiling on everything the house can draw at once.
Below the main are the branch breakers. Each one protects a single circuit running out into the house. A 15 amp breaker protects fourteen gauge wire. A 20 amp breaker protects twelve gauge. The pairing matters, because the breaker exists to protect the wire, not the appliance. Putting a larger breaker on smaller wire removes the protection entirely and is one of the more dangerous things an amateur can do in a panel.
The double-width breakers feed 240 volt circuits. Dryers, ranges, water heaters, air conditioning, and electric vehicle chargers all live here. They take up two slots because they connect to both hot legs of the service.
Look for empty slots while the door is open. If there are none, adding any new circuit means either a subpanel or a service upgrade, and that changes the cost of any future project considerably.
Also look at the labels. Most panels are labelled badly or not at all, usually because circuits were added over the years and nobody updated the card. Spending an afternoon mapping which breaker controls what, with one person at the panel and one walking the house, is genuinely useful. It matters most at exactly the moment when nobody has time to figure it out.
Two things you should not do inside the panel. Do not remove the cover unless you know what you are looking at, because the main lugs remain energised even with the main breaker off. And do not add or move breakers without understanding the wire sizes involved.
Everything else, reading labels, counting slots, checking the main rating, is safe to do with the door open and the cover on.
