At its heart though, what they did is take a game that was capable of making even non-gamers stop and have a look and translated it to an experience that allows you to invite that other person to join without sacrificing any aspect that made the original game great. In other words, Portal 2 in co-op is the definitive way to experience one of the landmark games of this generation.
The game begins with the newly formed Order of the Stone infiltrating a dungeon that Ivor tipped them off to. They manage to find a treasure room that contains what appears to be an enchanted flint and steel. After escaping the booby trapped dungeon, they come across the former Ocelots and their leader Aiden. They don’t seem too happy with the fact that you reached the dungeon before they did, Aiden mostly, and they begin to spew hurtful comments to the new team. Ambushed by the former Ocelots, now known as the Blaze Rods, Jessie and his friends explore an entirely new area only known as Sky City where resources are plentiful but nothing exists below the world. the world is conceived using what is only knows as the Eversource, a material that has the power to create all materials. Aiden convinces the city’s ruler that the Order is up to no good so that they can be punished and he could take the Eversource for himself. While this episode may be jam-packed with story and new characters, be warned; this will not be the last we see of Minecraft: Story Mode.
The Wii U doesn’t inspire that same impulse purchase instinct. While playing the right game on one with friends is generally considered to be a good time, unlike the Wii it’s gimmick isn’t quite as viscerally satisfying. It doesn’t really grab you. It’s a system that shares many of the same shortcomings as the Wii, but has little of its charm or raw appeal.
The are two reasons getting this right is important, and both reasons are the same but viewed from different perspectives- minecraft collectibles is still the biggest game in the world. The official VR mode is exclusive to the Rift, so you can bet that Microsoft/Mojang and Oculus worked together to make sure the experience is as inviting as possible. Getting this right is a major deal for both companies. This ties in to the other perspective, which is consumer-side. For a lot of people Minecraft will be a premier game for VR, and how accessible it is will become the baseline expectation of the experience. Make it nice and maybe it becomes the VR gateway drug, and at the moment the experience is acceptable. The default starting view may be the same Minecraft as always on an in-game screen, and Classic Control has high nausea potential, but the jerky VR Control is the kind of thing you learn to tolerate simply because it’s effective.
The result is, usually, pure unadulterated madness. Whereas this same set up can be annoying in games like Battletoads, here the die and die again as a result of your friends method is embraced with a level of carefree joy that matches the game’s initially confounding visual design. Cloudberry Kingdom’s multiplayer sessions are some of the best bonding experiences out there, despite the fact you’ll spend most the time with them resenting everyone around you.
The heyday of music gaming may have come and gone, but even if it was ultimately just a fad that we were all caught up in (which I don’t think is the case), it would do absolutely nothing to tarnish the memories of nights spent playing Rock Band with friends, nor can it ruin the fun still to be had in getting the band back together for one more tour.
There’s a certain joy in the shared experience of gaming frustration. While there are specific parts or levels in our favorite games that make us want to tear our hair out in anger, we usually advert a meltdown when we discover that there are many, many others who are having the same difficulty. In these shared experiences, we feel a bond.
The Wii U is in bad shape. While that’s clear from the system’s sales figures , which were a major contributor to Nintendo president Saturo Iwata recently deciding to cut his salary in half , the issues surrounding Nintendo’s flagship system are much greater in truth than just some slumping sales.
Oh sure you could make those same arguments against the Wii as it measured up against the PS3 and Xbox 360, but the difference there is that the Wii did have shelf presence. It was something of a viral sensation for Nintendo as a few people bought them initially, and soon invited everyone they knew to come over and play it. Most people’s first experience with the Wii was enjoying it with friends, which is how it was meant to be played. Seeing it on the shelf after that first time experiencing it made you instantly associate it with uniquely great times. That made purchasing it as a companion to your Xbox or Playstation, as opposed to an alternative in most cases, a much more reasonable proposition.
The collective groans of the Assassin’s Creed faithful heard upon the announcement the game was getting a multiplayer mode were not only noted, but honestly were not without merit when considering gaming’s long history of tacking on multiplayer modes to games best left as single player experiences. While that could have easily been the case here, thankfully the boys and girls at Ubisoft recognized the inherit potential of a multiplayer mode within this world, and executed it.
